Grade 1 · The Trailblazers
The year your child moves from learning to read, to reading to learn.
What your child will study
Global English Skills & Grammar
English transitions into a structured tool for thinking. Students organise ideas, use proper punctuation and communicate with precision.
Phonics & Sight Words
The engine of literacy. Students master consonant and vowel blends and high-frequency sight words, reading storybooks independently.
Writing Skills
Perfect print formation and penmanship. Once the tripod grip is mastered we introduce pre-cursive joins.
Mathematics
The shift from counting to structured reasoning. Number systems up to 500, place value, and addition and subtraction without regrouping.
Quantitative & Verbal Reasoning
Logic is a muscle. Number patterns and visual puzzles; alphabetical ordering, word pairings and synonyms.
Computer Studies
From basic device familiarity to mouse mastery and responsible digital behaviour in our Tech Lab.
Basic & Agricultural Science
The five senses, living and non-living things, and common plants and animals of the local Nigerian environment.
Social, Civic & Creative
How families and communities function; the Nigerian flag and anthem; integrity; Nigerian folktales and percussion instruments such as the shekere.

The day is segmented to maximise learning efficiency while preventing fatigue. Every period is purpose-driven.

How do you blend the British and Nigerian curricula in Grade 1?
We use British literacy and numeracy standards for global benchmarking, and integrate Nigerian Social Studies and National Values so students remain culturally grounded.
Why is Quantitative Reasoning introduced so early?
Logic is a muscle. Starting early means that by Common Entrance level, thinking outside the box is a natural habit.
Will my child learn cursive this year?
We focus on perfect print formation first, then introduce pre-cursive joins, usually by mid-Term 2.
