Grade 2: The Pathfinders

Our Pathfinders begin the transition from simple facts to meaningful application, sharpening analytical reading and mathematical reasoning — moving beyond the “what” to explore the “how”.

Where academic discipline meets creative curiosity.

What your child will study

Advanced phonics mastery — complex decoding and reading fluency, aiming for 60+ words per minute.

Mathematics

Logic mastery. Addition and subtraction with regrouping, and multiplication through repeated addition and arrays.

Quantitative & Verbal Reasoning

Magic Square puzzles and missing-value grids; alphabetical ordering to the second letter and advanced word analogies.

Basic & Agricultural Science

Pathfinders become investigators, studying properties of materials and exploring plant growth with scientific vocabulary.

Social, Civic & Creative

Families and community roles; hygienic habits, traffic rules and road signs; Nigerian drama, storytelling and crafts such as tie-dye.

Parent questions

How do you handle Common Entrance preparation in Grade 2?

Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning are embedded in the weekly timetable now, so logic becomes a second language long before Grade 6.

Does Grade 2 focus more on the British or Nigerian curriculum?

A 50/50 blend — Cambridge Primary standards for core subjects, National Values and Social Studies for citizenship.

Is multiplication introduced this early?

Yes, but we teach the logic first. Repeated addition and arrays mean Pathfinders understand why 3 × 4 = 12 before memorising tables.

Parents ask themselves

Is the work pitched right for my child? What happens if they are ahead — or behind?

Those are the right questions. Every page here is written to answer them plainly — and the admissions team will answer them in person on 07044000075.

How it works here

Known by name, taught by specialists.

Two things shape a day at MPIS more than anything else.
Guided study, inside the school day

Core work is reinforced under specialist supervision before the last bell, which is why children leave without a bag full of homework and still make progress.

Continuous assessment, not one big exam

Learning and evaluation happen together. Struggling learners get targeted support early; strong ones are stretched further.

A form tutor who knows the child

Pastoral care is structural, not optional. Every child has an adult whose job is to notice.
